I am a great believer in the theory that everything happens for a reason. Last night I got a call telling me I wasn't needed in work till 10.00 today. At 09.00 I go a message saying it would be at least noon before I was required. At 10.05 I got an email from a company that I had sent my resume to on 21st and had been trying to contact the recruiter since Friday noon. The email was asking me to contact them to arrange an interview and road test. So, strike while the iron is hot. I called them and arranged the interview for today and the end result is a job offer with a reputable, privately owned tanker company in Winnipeg.
I haven't yet accepted the offer but they do operate some very nice equipment and with around 12 years experience on tankers I think I would be OK with that.
Now what do I do? Discussions are under way!
For those who questioned my decision to change jobs and leave Big Freight in the first place, the recruiter / driver training manager is also ex Big Freight, although not in my time there.

I wish I could get a job that quick Dave. I've sent off about 20 applications and not ONE has offered me an interview due to the current financial climate.

If the money is good, the equipment is good and the driver retention is good then go for it. Canada does seem to be a strange place as most of the drivers seem to move around. It doesn't seem like here where people stay in the same job for years. What stuff do they haul in the tankers? Is it US work as well? Keep us posted mate.

The money would be a little better than the other jobs I have had. The equipment is very good, they regularly enter truck shows and win awards. Driver retention is also better than average, still no great feat though, as you say drivers don't stay long here in Canada. They carry a lot of food grade products and asphalt but do almost any bulk liquid product.
It is into the USA too.

i think you would be a fool to go all the way to canada and stay in a job you are not happy with, whats wrong with changing your job to make your lifestyle, more comfortable, more enjoyable, more profitable, do what you think is right and stuff the moaners.( they are only jealous because you are making a better life for yourself and family )

good luck dave

Didster thanks for your positive comments. I am just taking my time considering the offer.

I reckon you should go for it mate. It sounds a good job, and tanker work is a lot better than sheeting a load at -40!!

What make of truck do they have? Sounds like they look after their equipment. Better money too, what are you waiting for Dave?

Good luck.

Andy, they run Peterbuilt's and really do look after their equipment. The main sticking point is it's long haul. I have been enjoying my time at home and weekends off so much that I am taking my time considering this one, and of course after a couple of bad choices recently.
I have to go back for a second inteview with the owner of the company today.

Dave,

Have you had chance to speak with any of their other drivers? Has the company got a good reputation that precedes them? Even if they aren't 'the' best, are they likely to be better that where you are now? You did the long haul before; can you hack doing it again?

All the above are questions that really only you can answer. If you get a positive feeling about them, then you have to speak to 'Commander Home Forces' (the long haired General!! LOL) and hope you get 'positive feedback' from her about being away more.

Decisions, decisions!! Life would be sooo simple if we didn't have to make them!! The best of luck with whatever you decide.

Martin.
